You have a son and you don't have a job? Then I guess my tax dollars (I also live in Florida) are paying for you to raise your son. So if you're not already on it, then you need to apply for state assistance ASAP as it is your responsibility to ensure your child is being raised properly. If you have no work experience, you can get any basic retail job if they're hiring. Fast food restaurants, department stores, clothes stores. McDonald's, Wal-Mart, etc. You might also want to invest in furthering your education. First you need to get a part time job, and make sure you have someone that will look after your son while your working (a family member, a good friend, or daycare). Obviously use the majority of money you earn for you and your son, but save some of it to save up for furthering your education. With that money you save up, you can register for a course with an online university, or attend a local community college or even a state college if you can get accepted. That will open up more job opportunity for you. Florida Department of Children and Familes: http://www.myflorida.com/cf_web/ Florida Department of Health: http://www.doh.state.fl.us/ Good luck.

Jacksonville is a large, growing city. It is more like a southern industrial city. There are a lot of banking and insurance jobs. There is also manufacturing. Without a doubt it is the best area to find work in Florida at this time. The bus service is fair if you are going from main streets into the city. The bus service is county wide (Duval) so it is a vast system

Shipyard work is picking up at Jaxport, but getting there without a car can be problematical. There are lots of employers around the Baymeadows Way and Southpoint area which isn't that far from University. However, depending on just where you are on Uni, you may find yourself traveling all the way to the central bus terminal downtown to change busses and then ride all the way back out - Jax has a so-so bus network which isn't really transfer-friendly.
